Karuppu Kavuni - black rice - is one of those grains that quietly disappeared from urban kitchens when polished white rice took over everything. We are glad it is coming back.

Our Karuppu Kavuni Health Mix (கருப்பு கவுனி ஹெல்த் மிக்ஸ்) is built around this ancient black rice, blended with a carefully chosen set of millets, pulses, nuts, and spices - all naturally grown and individually roasted before grinding. No sugar added. No preservatives. No artificial colour or flavour.

Karuppu Kavuni is one of those things that paatis prescribed without a nutrition label. The dark colour of the grain is the first sign that there is something in there that ordinary rice does not have. The deeper the colour, the more of those protective compounds the grain carries - the same ones you find in purple grapes, dark berries, and jamun.

The black rice does something regular rice cannot. It carries colour that comes from within the grain itself - not added, not sprayed. Eating it regularly is one of the gentler ways to bring a genuinely different kind of nourishment into your daily routine.

The millets and pulses round it out. Naatu kambu gives the mix staying power. Ragi adds its characteristic strength and it’s the grain that has fed generation after generation of Tamil families. Green gram and black ulundhu bring protein that keeps you full without making you heavy. Channa adds texture and body.

The dry ginger and cardamom are not there for decoration. Both have been used in Tamil cooking for centuries specifically because they help the stomach handle heavy or rich food better. In a mix like this, they settle the stomach and make the whole preparation easier to digest.

Best before: 3 months from packing date

Transfer to a dry, airtight container right after opening. Keep away from the stove, steam, and moisture. A pantry shelf or kitchen cabinet away from heat is the right place.

In humid months, refrigerating after opening is the better choice. Let the container come to room temperature before opening, to prevent any moisture from settling on the powder.

A fresh pack smells warm, slightly nutty, and distinctly of roasted grains. If the smell has gone flat or rancid, do not use it.

After opening: Use within 60 days at room temperature or 90 days if refrigerated.

1. Karuppu Kavuni Kanji — the straightforward way

Mix 2 tablespoons of the health mix with 4 tablespoons of cold water until smooth. Bring one tumbler of water to a rolling boil. Pour the paste in while stirring continuously. Lower the flame and stir for 5–7 minutes until thick. The kanji will be a deep warm purple  that is the Karuppu Kavuni doing its job. Sweeten with karupatti or panangarkandu. A spoon of nei before serving makes it richer. Serves 1. Ten minutes total.

For babies from 8 months: 1 teaspoon powder in 4 tablespoons water or breast milk. Cook for 5 minutes, cool completely, no salt or sugar under 12 months.

2. With Warm Milk (quick version)

Warm one glass of cow's milk; don't boil. Mix 2 tablespoons of the health mix with 3 tablespoons of cold milk until smooth. Stir into the warm milk. Sweeten with karupatti. The colour is striking and children take to it quickly. Ready in 3 minutes.

3. Kavuni Ladoo

Dry roast 1 cup of the mix on low flame for 3 minutes until the aroma deepens. Off heat, mix in 3 tablespoons of melted nei, ½ cup powdered karupatti, and a pinch of cardamom. Shape into small balls while warm. Makes 10–12. Keeps for 10 days in an airtight container.
