After Opening: Transfer your rice into a clean, dry, airtight container as soon as you open the pack. This keeps moisture and pests out and your rice fresh for longer.

Where to Store It: Keep the container in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. A kitchen shelf or pantry works perfectly. Avoid storing near the stove or any area that gets warm and humid.

The Sun Drying Trick: Here's something our grandmothers always did and it genuinely works. Every few weeks spread your rice out on a clean dry cloth and let it sit in the sun for an hour or two. This naturally removes any trapped moisture and keeps the rice fresh without any chemicals. A simple old school habit that makes a real difference.

How Long Does It Last: When stored properly in an airtight container away from moisture, Poongar Red Rice stays fresh for several months. The cleaner and drier your storage conditions, the longer it lasts.

Poongar is incredibly versatile. Here are four traditional ways to bring out the best in this beautiful rice.

1. Poongar Red Rice Kanji (Porridge) 

The most traditional and nourishing way to start your day!

What you need:

1 cup Poongar Red Rice

4 to 5 cups water

Salt to taste

Pair with: buttermilk, pickle, or a small spoon of A2 ghee

How to make it: Soak the rice for 30 to 45 minutes. Pressure cook with plenty of water until it's soft and slightly mushy. Season with salt, finish with a generous spoon of ghee, and serve hot. Simple, comforting, and incredibly good for your gut.

2. Poongar Red Rice Sambar Sadam 

A wholesome one pot meal the whole family will love

What you need:

1 cup Poongar Red Rice

Half cup toor dal

2 cups sambar vegetables of your choice

Tamarind, tomato, sambar powder, and salt

Mustard seeds, curry leaves, and ghee for tempering

How to make it: Soak rice for 45 minutes. Cook rice and dal together in a pressure cooker. Prepare your sambar separately with tamarind water, tomatoes, vegetables, and sambar powder. Mix everything together, temper with mustard seeds and curry leaves in ghee, and serve hot. The nutty flavor of Poongar takes sambar sadam to a completely different level.

3. Poongar Red Rice Puttu 

A classic Kerala and Tamil breakfast that hits differently with red rice

What you need:

1 cup Poongar Red Rice flour (or soak and grind the rice coarsely)

Salt to taste

Water to moisten the flour

Grated coconut for layering

Pair with: kadala curry, banana, or a spoon of jaggery and ghee

How to make it: Dry roast the red rice flour lightly until you get a warm nutty aroma. Sprinkle water gradually and mix until the flour holds shape when pressed but still crumbles easily between your fingers. That texture is everything with puttu. Layer the puttu maker starting with grated coconut, then the flour, then coconut again and steam for 8 to 10 minutes. Turn it out onto your plate and eat it while it's hot. The natural nuttiness of Poongar makes this puttu taste so much more wholesome than the white rice version you grew up with.

4. Poongar Red Rice Idli and Dosa 

Your everyday breakfast just got a serious upgrade

What you need:

2 cups Poongar Red Rice

1 cup urad dal

Half teaspoon fenugreek seeds

Salt to taste

Gingelly oil for dosas

How to make it: Soak the red rice and urad dal separately for at least 6 to 8 hours. Grind urad dal first until smooth and fluffy, then grind the red rice to a slightly coarse texture. Mix both together with fenugreek seeds and salt. Allow the batter to ferment overnight or for at least 8 hours in a warm place. The batter will rise beautifully and develop a slightly tangy aroma that tells you it's ready.

For idlis pour into greased moulds and steam for 10 to 12 minutes. They'll come out slightly denser than regular white rice idlis but wonderfully soft with a gorgeous pinkish hue that makes them look as good as they taste.

For dosas heat a cast iron pan, drizzle a little gingelly oil, and spread the batter in a thin circle. The dosa will turn out slightly crisp on the edges with a deep reddish brown color and a flavor that pairs beautifully with coconut chutney and sambar.
